Spain outplay Messi’s Argentina to reach World Cup summit

Spain secured their second FIFA World Cup title with a commanding 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time.

In what was widely regarded as one of the most one-sided World Cup finals in recent memory, Spain dominated proceedings from start to finish. They limited Argentina to no shots on target throughout the 120 minutes and prevented Lionel Messi from making a significant impact. Argentina only entered Spain’s penalty area late in extra time.

Spain, already European champions, extended their impressive run with a 38-match unbeaten streak in international football. The win further highlights the strength of Spanish football, with the women’s team also holding the world title. Both senior teams reflect a national culture that emphasises technical, possession-based play from a young age.

Tactical dominance

Spain controlled 68% of possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, though their finishing remained a rare weakness. They converted just one of 20 shots. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez performed strongly to keep the score level for much of the match.

Key chances for Spain included a fine save by Martínez from a Lamine Yamal free-kick late in regular time and another from a Nico Williams header in extra time. A goal by Williams was controversially disallowed for a foul by Mikel Merino.

The breakthrough finally came in extra time when Williams headed the ball back across goal following a cross, allowing substitute Ferran Torres to finish clinically. Spain could have extended their lead further, but Torres was ruled narrowly offside on one occasion, and Williams missed a clear opportunity to set him up.

Argentina’s struggles

Argentina were reduced to 10 players in the 91st minute when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card. Even Messi was largely restricted to defensive duties as Spain bypassed him effectively. Argentina’s best efforts came late, with a long-range attempt from Messi and a close-range shot from Nicolás Tagliafico both missing the target.

Individual honours

All major individual awards went to Spanish players. Centre-back Pau Cubarsí was named Young Player of the Tournament, while teammate Lamine Yamal — part of the first pair of teenagers to start a World Cup final together — continued his remarkable rise. Goalkeeper Unai Simón, who conceded just one goal across the entire tournament, won the Golden Glove. Captain Rodri was awarded Player of the Tournament for his central role in the team’s success.

Following the final whistle, Spain’s players and staff celebrated enthusiastically. Argentina’s Leandro Paredes was sent off after the match for striking opponents. Messi, appearing emotional, received his runner-up medal on the field.
