ICC announces decision on pitch rating for Gaddafi stadium

ICC announces decision on pitch rating for Gaddafi stadium

On 20 August 2026, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced its final decisions regarding pitch rating appeals submitted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Cricket Canada (CC). These appeals were related to matches played in June 2026, where both venues had received demerit points due to unsatisfactory pitch conditions.

The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was initially handed a demerit point after the third Men’s ODI between Pakistan and Australia on 4 June was rated “Unsatisfactory.” However, upon review of match footage, referee reports, and captain feedback, the ICC Appeals Panel concluded that the pitch did not show excessive unevenness or spin. As a result, the demerit point has been rescinded, meaning Gaddafi Stadium now has zero demerit points on record.

Meanwhile, the Maple Leaf Cricket Ground in King City, Toronto had been penalized twice: once for the USA vs Netherlands match on 8 June (rated “Unsatisfactory”) and again for the Canada vs Netherlands match on 16 June (rated “Unfit”). The Appeals Panel overturned the first penalty, stating the pitch was consistent with a satisfactory surface. However, the second penalty remains, as the pitch was deemed dangerous and unfit for play. Therefore, Maple Leaf Cricket Ground continues to hold three demerit points.

This ruling highlights the ICC’s commitment to fair evaluation, ensuring that venues are judged not only by referee reports but also by deeper reviews. For Pakistan, the decision is a relief, as Gaddafi Stadium’s record is cleared. For Canada, however, the Maple Leaf Ground remains under scrutiny, with three points still threatening future hosting rights.
